Catriona Murdoch to participate at the POC week in NY
The event is taking place during the week-long celebrations for the twentieth anniversary of Resolution 1265/1999, and the adoption of the protection of civilians as an item on the agenda of the UN Security Council.
The panel, which, together with Global Rights Compliance, will see the presence of representatives of the Netherlands, Côte d’Ivoire, Switzerland, World Food Programme, UN OCHA, Action Against Hunger and Save the Children, will discuss the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2417/2018 (UNSC Res 2417) one year on from its adoption, which embedded the conflict and hunger agenda within the framework of the protection of civilians.
Catriona will discuss the importance of UNSC Res 2417, which condemns the use of starvation as a method of warfare, and calls on the UN system to provide an early warning alert to the Security Council in conflicts where there is a risk of famine. The presentation will also address how to operationalise UNSC Res 2417, the Rome Statute Amendment to include starvation as a war crime in a non-international armed conflict and the latest developments in the fight for accountability for the crime of starvation.
