GRC’S WEBINAR ON ‘A PANDEMIC OF HUNGER: IMPLEMENTING UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION 2417’
More than 34 million people globally endure emergency levels of food insecurity or face famine or famine like conditions requiring immediate life-saving action. The overwhelming majority of those starving live in conflict zones.
To mark the third anniversary of the UN Security Council adopting unanimously Resolution 2417 (UNSC 2417), on 19 May 2021 Global Rights Compliance will convene a webinar on the implementation of UNSC 2417 in relation to South Sudan, Yemen, Ethiopia and broader UNSC action, such as the newly established High-Level Task Force on Famine. The webinar aims to shed light on the humanitarian problem of conflict-induced food insecurity, the UN Security Council’s response and the importance of accountability for deliberate starvation of civilians in armed conflicts.
The webinar will coincide with a digital symposium on Opinio Juris on the implementation of UNSC 2417 kicking off on May 17 and featuring written think pieces from, amongst others, the World Food Programme, Mwatana for Human Rights, Alex de Waal, Chris Newton, Yousuf Syed Khan and Emanuela-Chiara Gillard.
The webinar promises to be a vital and timely discussion ahead of the Protection of Civilians Week and the UN Secretary’s General report on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict.
