Outcome Document: 2022 Protection of Civilians Week: Side Event on Conflict and Hunger
07 September 2022

On 23 May 2022, the governments of Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United States, together with Global Rights Compliance (GRC), WFP, FAO, the Global Network Against Food Crises, Action Against Hunger, CARE, World Vision, Concern Worldwide, and Save the Children convened a high-level virtual side event to the 2022 UN Protection of Civilians (POC) week, on the topic of the impact of conflict on hunger. Speakers during the event, including GRC Partner Catriona Murdoch, highlighted the disproportionate impact of conflict and hunger on marginalised groups and why these groups should be at the center of response efforts, as well as elucidated on perspectives from different conflict-affected areas and potential measures to prevent and mitigate the impact of conflict on food security.

Ahead of next week’s UN General Assembly roundtable event on Preventing Famine and Fighting Food Insecurity, we are publishing the Outcome Document from the POC week event, which brings together a set of recommendations for Member States on how to prevent and respond to conflict-induced hunger. We hope the roundtable participants are able to take on these recommendations as part of their discussion on collective action and solutions needed to address the acute food security crises facing the world currently.
